Lackman Road to Eastbound I-435 Long-Term Ramp Closure
EXPECT DELAYS! 24/7 LONG-TERM RAMP CLOSURE: Lackman Road to eastbound I-435 entrance ramp will be CLOSED, 24/7 round the clock, for full ramp reconstruction work beginning at 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 13 and will reopen to all traffic on Sunday, November 1, weather permitting.
SPECIAL NOTE > > > The NEW Renner Boulevard to eastbound K-10 ramp will OPEN on Thursday evening, August 13 prior to the Lackman Road to eastbound I-435 ramp closing. The other eastbound Renner Boulevard ramps are scheduled to reopen on Monday, August 17, weather permitting.
Advance message boards will alert drivers to the ramp closure. A marked detour will be provided (see detour map above). Southbound Lackman Road ramp traffic will detour via westbound College Boulevard to northbound Renner Boulevard to the new Renner Boulevard to eastbound K-10 ramp to access eastbound I-435. An optional recommended detour route for southbound Lackman Road traffic is eastbound College Boulevard to Quivira Road to access eastbound I-435. Northbound Lackman Road ramp traffic will detour via westbound 95th Street to access the I-435 ramps.
Drivers should expect delays during the ramp closure and must use alternate routes. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage, cones and barricades.

Former Eastbound K-10 to Northbound I-435 Flyover Ramp

EXPECT DELAYS! OVERIGHT FULL ROADWAY CLOSURES: The former eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 flyover ramp bridge will be demolished by heavy equipment via a series of overnight full roadway closures on I-435 and K-10. There will be no implosions for the bridge removal. (See bridge ramp removal information detailed below.) NOTE: The new eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 flyover ramp will open to traffic sometime today, Thursday, July 30.

 

Demolition work on the former flyover ramp bridge will take place overnight beginning at 10 p.m. each evening and will reopen to all traffic at 5 a.m. the following morning on Monday, August 3-Wednesday, August 12 (excluding Friday-Sunday, August 7-9), weather permitting. The overnight closures are needed so that crews can safely remove the flyover bridge ramp structure.

 

Here are the planned full overnight roadway closures and marked detour routes for the bridge demolition work as follows. See marked detour map below.

 

CLOSES at 10 p.m. on Monday, August 3 and REOPENS at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 4 (unless noted otherwise**):

 

**8-10 p.m.  Westbound K-10 left lane from I-435 to Renner Boulevard

Westbound/northbound I-435 right lane over westbound K-10 bridge

 

10 p.m.        All lanes of westbound K-10 from westbound I-435 to southbound I-435 to westbound K-10 ramp
Traffic will detour via northbound I-435 to 87th Street exit back onto eastbound K-10 back to access westbound K-10

 

CLOSES at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4 and REOPENS at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 5 (unless noted otherwise**):

 

**8-10 p.m.  Westbound K-10 left lane from I-435 to Renner Boulevard

 

10 p.m.        All lanes of eastbound/southbound and westbound/northbound I-435 at the eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 flyover ramp

Traffic will detour via northbound I-435 to 87th Street exit back onto southbound/eastbound I-435 to access eastbound K-10

 

CLOSES at 10 p.m. on Monday, August 10 and REOPENS at 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11:

 

10 p.m.        All lanes of eastbound/southbound and westbound/northbound I-435 at the eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 flyover ramp
Traffic will detour via westbound K-10 to Ridgeview Road exit back onto eastbound K-10 to access eastbound and westbound I-435

 

CLOSES at 10 p.m. on Tuesday, August 11 and REOPENS at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, August 12:

 

10 p.m.        All lanes of westbound K-10 from westbound I-435 to southbound I-435 to westbound K-10 ramp
Traffic will detour via northbound I-435 to 87th Street exit back onto eastbound K-10 to access westbound K-10

The process for the flyover bridge ramp demolition and removal will occur as follows (see flyover bridge diagram below). Plywood will be placed on existing K-10 and I-435 roadway to protect pavement from any impact damage from falling debris.

1) Barrier wall/handrails and the bridge deck will be removed will be removed via excavator. The excavators have heavy hammer attachments that will “peck away” at the structures.
2) Structural steel bridge girders (which support the bridge deck) will be cut and removed in sections via crane off the bridge piers and abutments.
3) Bridge piers and abutments (which support the bridge girders) will be removed via excavator. The excavators have heavy hammer attachments that will “peck away” at the structures.

EXPECT MAJOR DELAYS! WEEKEND-LONG FULL ROADWAY & RAMP CLOSURES:  The following lane, ramp and roadway closures on eastbound and westbound I-435 at the I-35 interchange are scheduled to occur for installation of bridge girders for the new eastbound I-435 to northbound I-35 flyover ramp**, beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, August 7 and reopening to all traffic at 5 a.m. on Monday, August 10, weather permitting (Johnson County).

 

CLOSES at 10 p.m. on Friday, August 7 and REOPENS at 5 a.m. on Monday, August 10 as follows:

 

All lanes of westbound I-435 at I-35 CLOSED.
WB I-435 mainline thru traffic will detour via northbound U.S. 69 to westbound 87th Street back onto southbound I-35 to access westbound I-435.

 

All lanes of eastbound I-435 at I-35 CLOSED.
EB I-435 mainline thru traffic will detour via northbound I-35 to eastbound 87th Street back onto southbound U.S. 69 to access eastbound I-435.

 

Northbound I-35 to westbound I-435 ramp CLOSED.
Northbound I-35 ramp traffic will detour via northbound I-35 to westbound 95th Street back onto southbound I-35 to access westbound I-435.

 

Southbound I-35 to eastbound I-435 ramp CLOSED.
Southbound I-35 ramp traffic will detour via eastbound 119th Street back onto northbound I-35 to access eastbound I-435.

 

Lackman Road to eastbound I-435 ramp CLOSED.
Lackman Road ramp traffic will detour via eastbound College Boulevard to northbound Quivira Road to access eastbound I-435.

 

Marked detours will be provided. See detour map below.  Advance message boards will alert drivers to the full roadway and ramp closures. Drivers should expect major delays during the weekend-long closures and must use alternate routes.

Westbound K-10 Split Lane at Renner Boulevard

 

NEW SPLIT LANE TRAFFIC SHIFT: Westbound K-10 LEFT LANE at Renner Boulevard has been shifted to the south onto existing eastbound K-10 mainline pavement as of late Saturday, July 25, so that crews can complete reconstruction work in the K-10 and Renner Boulevard Interchange area. Westbound K-10 split lane traffic is separated by concrete barrier from the eastbound K-10 traffic in this side-by-side traffic shift. This dedicated westbound K-10 split lane is scheduled to be shifted back to its normal alignment by early September 2015, weather permitting.

NEW Eastbound K-10 to Northbound I-435 Flyover Ramp

OPENING TOMORROW! The NEW eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 two-lane flyover ramp will OPEN to all traffic by Thursday evening, July 30, weather permitting. Once the new ramp is fully opened to all traffic, the existing eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 single lane flyover ramp will be PERMANENTLY CLOSED to all traffic and demolition work of the existing structure will begin on Monday evening, August 3.

 

The existing eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 flyover ramp bridge will be demolished by heavy equipment via a series of overnight full roadway closures on I-435 and/or K-10. There will be no implosions for the bridge removal. Demolition work on the existing flyover ramp bridge will take place overnight beginning at 10 p.m. and reopening to all traffic at 5 a.m. p.m. the following morning, daily Monday, August 3-Wednesday, August 12, (excluding overnight closures on Friday-Sunday, August 7-9), weather permitting. The overnight closures are needed so that crews can safely remove the flyover bridge ramp structure. Advance separate notification will be sent for next week’s overnight full roadway closures.
