Eastbound I-435 from K-10 to Pflumm Road

MAJOR SHORT-TERM 10-DAY LANE CLOSURES: Eastbound I-435 from K-10 to Pflumm Road REDUCED TO TWO THROUGH LANES for flyover bridge ramp demolition work beginning at 10 p.m. TODAY, Monday, May 16 and reopening at 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, weather permitting. (See map above for a visual of the lane closure area location.)

This 10-day lane closure is in the location where the eastbound I-435 left two lanes crossover to the westbound side of the median, which means the eastbound I-435 left two lanes will remain open in this area, while the lane that stayed on the right will now be closed. Traffic wishing to access Quivira Road or U.S. 69 would previously stay in that right lane at the lane split, just past Lackman Road, but with that lane now closed, drivers will be required to crossover at I-35. Eastbound I-435 access to Quivira Road and U.S. 69 will be provided via a new single lane crossover, back to the east side of the median, just past I-35.

Drivers that travel eastbound K-10 and southbound/eastbound I-435 in this area will see increased traffic delays, especially during rush hour commutes, morning primarily. Drivers should allow extra time, should pay extra special attention and follow all signage for their daily commute routes through this area, as traffic patterns will be changing tonight.

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

Marshall Drive& 95th Street

PHASE A TRAFFIC SHIFT UPDATE: Marshall Drive at 95th Street on the west side of the 95th Street and I-35 Interchange is scheduled to OPEN to traffic by 8 a.m. this Saturday, May 7, 2016, weather permitting. The new Marshall Drive underpass and two adjacent single-lane roundabouts will open allowing traffic to travel north and south on Marshall Drive separated from 95th Street, which is a major change from what drivers are used to. In addition, Marshall Drive to westbound 95th Street and eastbound 95th Street to Marshall Drive will open to traffic as well. See the detailed map above for this Phase A traffic shift configuration that will be in place through late June 2016, weather permitting.

Here’s what this means for drivers: Drivers will now utilize two new single-lane roundabouts on Marshall Drive to access 95th Street. For drivers who are not familiar with roundabouts, the Kansas Department of Transportation has a website page at this link:  http://www.ksdot.org/Roundabouts/ dedicated to roundabouts that will help you better understand how to navigate through them. Included on this page, you will find a video link: http://www.ksdot.org/Roundabouts/resources.asp that will show drivers how to safely navigate through a roundabout.

Drivers will now be able to access area businesses, including Costco, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Hoe’s Oriental Market, among others, on the west side of the interchange much easier with the opening of Marshall Drive at 95th Street.

NEW SPLIT LANE TRAFFIC SHIFT: Eastbound I-435 traffic will be shifted to THREE THROUGH LANES, including one new split lane of traffic, from Santa Fe Trail Drive to U.S. 69 for roadway widening work beginning at 10 p.m. on Monday, April 11 through Late Fall 2016, weather permitting.

> > > Here’s what this means for drivers:

Two left (through) lanes of eastbound I-435 will cross over the existing median to the north and run adjacent to the westbound I-435 lanes. Traffic in these two through lanes will have NO access to exit to Quivira Road, U.S. 69 or Antioch Road.

One right (through) lane of eastbound I-435 will remain south of the existing median barrier. Concrete barrier will be located on either side of this single lane (as shown in the graphic below). Traffic in this right through lane will have access to exit to Quivira Road, U.S. 69 or Antioch Road.

See the graphics above and below for a visual understanding of these traffic movements.

REDUCING WEAVING MOVEMENTS BY ADDING COLLECTOR-DISTRIBUTOR ROADS ON THE #JOCOGATEWAY PROJECT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUSJz2ilG0c&feature=youtu.be

There have been numerous traffic shifts this year as the focus of construction on the ‪#‎jocogateway project has been expanding and improving the eastbound traffic flow from K-10 to I-435. The collector-distributor road (C-D road) system currently under construction will help reduce weaving and improve safety by separating through-traffic on eastbound K-10 and I-435 from drivers wanting to access I-35 or exit to local roads. The new road configuration will change decision points for drivers, thus it is important for drivers to follow all posted signs.
View the latest video (left photo above) showing the construction of the eastbound C-D road system that runs parallel to I-435. The New C-D road is scheduled to open next Friday, October 23, weather permitting. The C-D road under construction YouTube video is available online at: https://youtu.be/Us5Jvp1ofC4
A traffic simulation video (right photo above) that shows drivers how they will navigate through the new collector-distributor road and the new decision points is also available online at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUSJz2ilG0c&feature=youtu.be
