SPECIAL PROJECT ADVISORY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

News Contact:  Kimberly Qualls, (785) 640-9340 or kimberly.qualls@ks.gov

The Johnson County Gateway Project improved the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchange area by constructing or rehabilitating a total of 27 bridges. On several of the bridge approaches, there had been settlement leading up to the bridges. As of Wednesday morning, February 8, 2017 all bridge approach pavement repair work has been completed throughout the Johnson County Gateway project limits. ,

Since mid-November 2016, crews have been completing work during nighttime hours to correct the settlement issues. A specialized company called, URETEK, performed the work in collaboration with GIC. Repairs included injecting a polymer into the ground beneath the pavement areas that have settled. This special polymer reacts with the foundation materials restoring their load-bearing capacity while raising the roadway back to the proper level.

What’s left to do on the #JoCoGateway Project? Answer: Some minor finishing tasks. As weather permits, there will be some random daily lane closures throughout the project, so that crews can complete such tasks as the addition of permanent pavement markings of highway icon shields, painting of barrier walls, erosion control and sign work. All finishing work for the #joccogateway project is scheduled to be completed by late April 2017, weather permitting.

As always, we will provide advance notice for these random lane closures. Updated daily traffic information for the #jocogateway interchange project can be viewed at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp.

The Kansas Department of Transportation and GIC urge all motorists to be alert, take it slow, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
