JoCo Gateway Project to Address Bridge Approach Settling Issue Update

TRAFFIC ALERT update

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 21, 2016

News Contact:  Kimberly Qualls, (785) 640-9340 or kimberly.qualls@ks.gov

The Johnson County Gateway Project has improved the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchange area by constructing or rehabilitating a total of 27 bridges. On several of the bridge approaches, there has been settlement leading up to the bridges. Kansas Department of Transportation and GIC, project contractor, staff are aware of these locations and are taking corrective action to address them.

Starting Monday, November 14 through Tuesday, January 31, weather permitting, crews will be working during nighttime hours to correct the settlement issues. A specialized company called, URETEK, will be performing the work in collaboration with GIC. Repairs include injecting a polymer into the ground beneath the pavement areas that have settled. This special polymer reacts with the foundation materials restoring their load-bearing capacity while raising the roadway back to the proper level.

The general locations of the bridge approaches that still need to be repaired are as follows:

  • Eastbound-I-435 at Lackman Road (Both Ends)
  • Eastbound I-435 at Santa Fe Trail Drive (Both Ends)
  • Eastbound Collector-Distributor Road to I-35 at Lackman Road (Approach End)
  • Eastbound Collector-Distributor Road to I-35 at Santa Fe Trail Drive (Departure End)
  • Southbound I-435 (Departure End)

There will be lane closures utilized during this nighttime work. As always, we will provide advance notice for these lane closures. Updated daily traffic information for the #jocogateway interchange project can be viewed at: www.jocogateway.com and for the entire Kansas City Metro Area at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp.

The Kansas Department of Transportation and GIC urge all motorists to be alert, take it slow, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

95th Street & I-35 Diverging Diamond Interchange Project

Your commute through the 95th Street and I-35 interchange will soon change as construction begins this upcoming Monday, February 22, to reconstruct the existing diamond interchange into a new diverging diamond interchange. This interchange reconstruction work is part of the ongoing #jocogateway interchange Phase 2 project.

To view factsheets detailing the construction phasing and schedule for the project, click here http://jocogateway.com/category/fact-sheets/. NOTE: The detour signing will be in place in advance of any project closures. With lots of ongoing utility work in the interchange area (that must be completed first), the full closure of the interchange itself is now slated for late February 2016, weather permitting. Stay tuned as we will keep you updated and informed in advance as the project progresses.

• Adjacent local road closures will occur throughout construction meaning access to local businesses will change during this time. Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout construction via marked detours. To view the marked detours that will be in place during construction for access to local businesses, as well as for access to 95th Street and I-35, click here: http://jocogateway.com/95th-street-and-i-35-diverging-diamond-interchange/

TRAFFIC ALERT – UPDATE!

Westbound I-435 at I-35 Interchange

EXPECT DELAYS! OVERNIGHT LANE & RAMP CLOSURES: Beginning at 10:00 p.m. on Monday-Tuesday, June 22-23 and reopening to all traffic at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday-Wednesday, June 23-24, all westbound I-435 through traffic from Quivira Road to I-35 will be directed through the overnight work zone via the westbound I-435 FAR LEFT THROUGH LANE (between concrete barriers). This will be the only westbound I-435 through lane open. Northbound I-35 to westbound I-435 ramp will be CLOSED to all traffic for the installation of bridge girders on the new westbound I-435 to southbound I-35 flyover ramp beginning at 10:00 p.m. on Monday-Tuesday, June 22-23 and reopening to all traffic at 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday-Wednesday, June 23-24 (Johnson County). We apologize for any confusion created by the short notice for this major traffic control change, but good news is westbound I-435 through traffic can travel through the overnight work zone.

>>SPECIAL NOTE:<< Westbound I-435 mainline through traffic can use an alternate route via northbound U.S. 69 to 87th Street exit then southbound I-35 to access westbound I-435. THIS WILL NOT BE A SIGNED DETOUR ROUTE (as noted above), since westbound I-435 through traffic can utilize the far left through lane (located between concrete barriers).

A marked detour will be provided. See detour map above. Northbound I-35 to westbound I-435 ramp traffic will detour via northbound I-35 to 95th Street exit back onto southbound I-35 to access westbound I-435.

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the full roadway and ramp closures. Drivers should expect delays during the overnight roadway and ramp closures and must use alternate routes.

I-435 Lane Split During Construction

In order to complete the widening and pavement reconstruction on I-435 between U.S. 69 and I-35 while still maintaining three through lanes of traffic, GIC will ‘split traffic’ to accommodate the construction zone. This year you will see a westbound lane on the eastbound side of I-435 between two concrete safety barriers. Next year, this configuration will be reversed.  The graphics illustrate how this will work.

This graphic shows the lane movements and work area on eastbound and westbound I-435.
