Eastbound I-435 from K-10 to Pflumm Road

MAJOR SHORT-TERM 10-DAY LANE CLOSURES: Eastbound I-435 from K-10 to Pflumm Road REDUCED TO TWO THROUGH LANES for flyover bridge ramp demolition work beginning at 10 p.m. TODAY, Monday, May 16 and reopening at 5 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, weather permitting. (See map above for a visual of the lane closure area location.)

This 10-day lane closure is in the location where the eastbound I-435 left two lanes crossover to the westbound side of the median, which means the eastbound I-435 left two lanes will remain open in this area, while the lane that stayed on the right will now be closed. Traffic wishing to access Quivira Road or U.S. 69 would previously stay in that right lane at the lane split, just past Lackman Road, but with that lane now closed, drivers will be required to crossover at I-35. Eastbound I-435 access to Quivira Road and U.S. 69 will be provided via a new single lane crossover, back to the east side of the median, just past I-35.

Drivers that travel eastbound K-10 and southbound/eastbound I-435 in this area will see increased traffic delays, especially during rush hour commutes, morning primarily. Drivers should allow extra time, should pay extra special attention and follow all signage for their daily commute routes through this area, as traffic patterns will be changing tonight.

The Kansas Department of Transportation urges all motorists to be alert, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.

95th Street and I-35 Diverging Diamond Interchange

95th Street & I-35 Diverging Diamond Interchange Project

Your commute through the 95th Street and I-35 interchange will soon change as construction begins in mid-February to reconstruct the existing diamond interchange into a new diverging diamond interchange. This interchange reconstruction work is part of the ongoing #jocogateway interchange Phase 2 project.

Here’s what this means for drivers:

• Beginning mid-February through mid-August 2016, weather permitting, all ramps to/from 95th Street to/from I-35 and 95th Street over I-35 will be CLOSED to all through traffic. To view factsheets detailing the construction phasing and schedule for the project, click here http://jocogateway.com/category/fact-sheets/. NOTE: The detour signing will be in place in advance of any project closures.

• Adjacent local road closures will occur throughout construction meaning access to local businesses will change during this time. Access to local businesses will be maintained throughout construction via marked detours. To view the marked detours that will be in place during construction for access to local businesses, as well as for access to 95th Street and I-35, click here: http://jocogateway.com/95th-street-and-i-35-diverging-diamond-interchange/

Westbound I-435 Traffic Shift & Project Work Zone Map

Westbound I-435 from U.S. 69 to I-35

UPCOMING TRAFFIC SHIFT: Westbound I-435 traffic from U.S. 69 to just west of I-35 will be shifted to the south with three through and one auxiliary lane for reconstruction work on the westbound I-435 lanes, 24/7 round the clock, beginning on Thursday, September 4 through late 2014, weather permitting, in Johnson County.

Crews will begin setting traffic control at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3 and the traffic shift will be in place before morning rush hour on Thursday, September 4, weather permitting.

Westbound I-435 traffic (from U.S. 69 to just west of I-35) will travel through the work zone via three through lanes and one auxiliary lane as follows:
1) Far left lane traffic will travel through the work zone only directed via concrete barrier on either side of the driving lane. Traffic will travel on an 11-foot wide driving lane with an approximate 2-foot left shoulder and 8-foot right shoulder (lane is located in former eastbound I-435 lane/median area).
2) Center lane traffic will travel through the work zone as normal
3) Right lane traffic will travel through the work zone as normal
4) Far right auxiliary lane will be used for traffic wishing to access the U.S. 69, Quivira Road and I-35 interchanges

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the traffic shift. There will be an 11-foot lane width restriction and a 55 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone throughout the project duration. Note: Eastbound I-435 traffic through this area has already been shifted to the south slightly to accommodate the westbound I-435 traffic shift. All ramp access will remain open at the U.S. 69, Quivira Road and I-35 interchanges.

I-435 Lane Split During Construction

In order to complete the widening and pavement reconstruction on I-435 between U.S. 69 and I-35 while still maintaining three through lanes of traffic, GIC will ‘split traffic’ to accommodate the construction zone. This year you will see a westbound lane on the eastbound side of I-435 between two concrete safety barriers. Next year, this configuration will be reversed.  The graphics illustrate how this will work.

This graphic shows the lane movements and work area on eastbound and westbound I-435.
