JoCo Gateway Project to Address Bridge Approach Settling Issue

TRAFFIC ALERT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 10, 2016

News Contact:  Kimberly Qualls, (785) 640-9340 or kimberly.qualls@ks.gov

JoCo Gateway Project to Address Bridge Approach Settling Issue

The Johnson County Gateway Project has improved the I-435/I-35/K-10 interchange area by constructing or rehabilitating a total of 27 bridges. On nine of the bridge approaches, there has been settlement leading up to the bridges. Kansas Department of Transportation and GIC, project contractor, staff are aware of these locations and are taking corrective action to address them.

Starting November 14 through approximately December 20, weather permitting, crews will be working during nighttime hours to correct the settlement issues. A specialized company called, URETEK, will be performing the work in collaboration with GIC. Repairs include injecting a polymer into the ground beneath the pavement areas that have settled. This special polymer reacts with the foundation materials restoring their load-bearing capacity while raising the roadway back to the proper level.

The general locations of the bridge approaches that will be repaired are as follows:

  • Southbound/eastbound I-435 to I-35 (three locations)
  • Eastbound I-435 (four locations)
  • Eastbound I-435 to northbound I-35 flyover ramp (two locations)

There will be lane closures utilized during this nighttime work. As always, we will provide advance notice for these lane closures. Updated daily traffic information for the #jocogateway interchange project can be viewed at: www.jocogateway.com and for the entire Kansas City Metro Area at: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp.

The Kansas Department of Transportation and GIC urge all motorists to be alert, take it slow, obey the warning signs, and “Give ‘Em a Brake!” when approaching and driving through the project work zone.
