Virtual Drive Video Series for Completed JoCo Gateway Phase 2 Project Now Available Online

Virtual Drive Video Series for Completed JoCo Gateway
Phase 2 Project Now Available Online

Motorists can now ‘virtually drive’ the completed Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Design-Build Project via a series of videos that are being released today. The Kansas Department of Transportation along with the project contractor, Gateway Interchange Constructors, is launching the online video series to provide a drive-through and aerial view look as to how drivers will navigate through the Phase 2 project that is scheduled for completion in December 2016. The video series will also provide motorists with a better understanding of the final interchange configuration and how their travel will be improved through the interchange area.
Some of the major interchange improvements include adding new two-lane flyover bridge ramps from westbound I-435 to southbound I-35, eastbound I-435 to northbound I-35 and from eastbound K-10 to northbound I-35. Collector-distributor roads are being built to help improve safety by reducing weaving and separating interstate traffic from traffic exiting at the local interchanges.
The entire online Johnson County Gateway Project video series is available on the project website: /news-info-events/video-gallery/. Below you will find a descriptive list of the five videos in the series now available.
• Follow-along simulation of entire project
o https://youtu.be/x2dM5O4K7xQ
o This is a graphic visualization of the Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Project which provides a ground level simulation as to how the overall completed project improvements will look.

• Aerial overview simulation of entire project
o https://youtu.be/eoSeUEaqko8
o This simulation provides an overview aerial view of the improvements that will be completed during the Phase 2 Project.

• Westbound I-435 to southbound I-35 improvements
o https://youtu.be/nu8zY273ZWs
o This drive-along simulation shows the improvements that will be made from westbound I-435 to southbound I-35.

• Eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 and I-35 improvements
o https://youtu.be/hUSJz2ilG0c
o This drive-along simulation shows the improvements that will be made from eastbound K-10 to northbound I-435 and I-35, including the new collector-distributor road that will separate traffic from the mainline lanes, providing congestion relief and reducing weave movements.

Westbound K-10 to Ridgeview Road improvements
o https://youtu.be/bodkHjrxeMs
o This drive-along simulation shows the improvements that will be made from westbound K-10 to Ridgeview Road, including a look at the new diverging diamond interchange.
Over 230,000 vehicles use the I-435/I-35/K-10 Interchange today and that number is estimated to grow to 380,000 by the year 2040. This traffic demand volume increase along with future economic development potential, declining infrastructure and roadway safety concerns are several of the key reasons for much needed improvements in the interchange area.
The Johnson County Gateway Phase 2 Design-Build Project will improve 90 percent of the existing traffic problems drivers experience today and 50 percent of the projected 2040 traffic problems. Construction will be occurring throughout the project area in order to get things done quickly and efficiently.
The budget for Phase 2 of the Johnson County Gateway is $288 million, which includes a $3 million schedule incentive GIC accepted to accelerate construction by seven months to complete work by December 31, 2016. This includes T-WORKS construction funding, additional funding from the cities of Lenexa and Olathe, and funding for design and engineering work. Project construction began in spring 2014.
